Greetings, e-Readers!
The Imagine No Malaria campaign of the United Methodist Church is in full swing – as an instrumental part of the church’s initiative to end malaria deaths in Africa by 2015. In November, volunteers with Imagine No Malaria and its international partners distributed more than 360,000 bed nets in Sierra Leone. But first, they had to overcome a lack of trust in a country still recovering from civil war. UMNS’ Kay Panovec reports.
Just in time for the New Year, we have a list of resolutions worth keeping from Missy Buchanan, and the Reporter staff members compiled our own list of what we hope to accomplish in 2011. We also have a review by Liz Applegate of Lysa TerKeurst’s new book Made to Crave, which offers spiritual guidance for those who’ve made a weight loss resolution.
We have several contributions from United Methodist bishops this week: Northern Alabama Bishop Will Willimon recently spoke with Mallory McCall about his new book Why Jesus?;Missouri Bishop Robert Schnase says recently approved recommendations from the Call to Action Steering Team offer a clear vision to carry out the church’s vision; and in his annual “birthday letter” to Martin Luther King Jr., retired Bishop Woodie White reflects on America’s progress as well as its continued struggles with racial equality. And in sad news, Bishop Edsel Ammons died Dec. 24 at age 86. UMNS’ Heather Hahn has more on the life of the trailblazing African-American bishop.
Don’t miss stories on a church that rekindled its spiritual fire after an arsonist destroyed its sanctuary; Indianapolis congregations that are building Habitat Homes; a ministry honoring 2,400 fallen soldiers; History of Hymns and more!
Blessings,
