“Don’t forget to move your clocks back this weekend!” When I heard this, I cringed.
Some people like this time change as we “get” an extra hour of sleep. But for me it’s just another reminder of less sunshine during the day - and that the craziness of the holiday season right around the corner.
Already stores have Christmas trees on display and carols will be playing on local radio stations soon. I’m just not ready for the Christmas hub-bub and prefer the natural progression of things: FIRST we have Thanksgiving and THEN we have Christmas.
November is when the craziness begins and a month that often gets reduced to one day of thanks for Thanksgiving. To help myself with feeling overwhelmed, I began a "thankful ritual" several years ago - consciously finding 5 things everyday to be thankful for – every day for 30 days.
Believe me, there have been times when this ritual is annoying: a bad day at the office, bad traffic, an argument with a loved one, a dwindling checking account. But it’s at those times when realize I need my “thankful reminders” the most. Just being intentionally thankful can change my focus from one of self-centeredness to one of outward appreciation.
So, for today my 5 things:
- The extra hour I have now to enjoy the sunshine on my face.
- The ability to care for my family.
- A house to protect us as the cooler weather approaches.
- My three sons who bring me so much joy.
- A husband who works hard to take care of his family.
So for this weekend as you set back your clocks before bedtime Saturday night, remember to take a deep breath before the holiday sprint to Christmas, be thankful and maybe start a thankful ritual of your own.
What are your 5 things to be thankful for today?
