Greetings, e-Readers!
We’re far enough past General Conference that we’re starting to feel caught up on our sleep ... but the effort of getting all of the GC reports into our print edition continues. So many stories, so few column inches!
On our cover, we have the big GC roundup from Rich Peck with some great photos of delegates that jumps to our color inside spread.
We also have a non-GC piece: Bill Fentum’s Q&A with Craig Kennet Miller about his new book, 7 Myths of the United Methodist Church. Turns out there are some real whoppers that many United Methodists have accepted as fact for a long time.
I took some time during General Conference to get off-site and sit in on some events hosted by various coalitions. This issue, I bring a report on a keynote address by Dr. Mark Yarhouse, who researches sexual identity issues, given during a luncheon sponsored by Transforming Congregations.
The orders of the day at General Conference often involve celebrating particular ministries. We have reports on the Rural Life Celebration, the centennial of United Methodist Men and the 60th anniversary of The Advance for Christ and His Church.
Commentaries this week include reflections on patriotism and faith by Bishop White; a challenge from Dennis Henley to do something personally about pensions for retired pastors in Africa; and a few confessions from Amy Forbus regarding how difficult it can be to stay in the spirit of “holy conferencing.”
All this, plus a chat with author John Eldredge, a review of Iron Man, History of Hymns and more!
Enjoy!
Blessings,
Robin Russell, Managing Editor
