Since 2000, I've written several stories for the Reporter about a popular anti-hunger event: Souper Bowl of Caring. It's too late to get an advance piece into the paper this year –- but not too late to give it an online plug, for anyone who might like to join in.
The concept –- dreamed up nearly two decades ago by Presbyterian minister, the Rev. Brad Smith –- calls for church youth to collect $1 donations in soup kettles on Super Bowl Sunday morning.
The proceeds go to any mission or charity the youth select. All Souper Bowl organizers ask is that you report the total figure to their headquarters that evening, by calling (800) 358-SOUP. Youth are also urged to participate in a "service blitz," volunteering for a day at local food banks or soup kitchens.
In 2007, more than 2,700 United Methodist congregations took part, raising more than $975,000. And this year promises to be even better; the United Methodist Committee on Relief reported on Jan. 14 that 2,900 UMCs had already signed up.
If your group is only hearing about it this week, that's OK. Just bring a few soup kettles to church on Feb. 3 and announce the need to your congregation. Souper Bowl's site, www.souperbowl.org, has all the information you need.
