In our August 17 issue, Gen-X Rising guest columnist Eric Van Meter suggests that maybe we should stop asking the same old questions about church decline and ask some new ones.
In a blog entry this morning over at Jedi Pastor Ken, church planter Ken Hagler asks, "Whatever happened to the church at Corinth? Thessalonica? Ephesus? Galatia? Are any of these churches still open?" In case you don't get over there to read his whole post, here's his conclusion: "Corinth, Ephesus, and the others are gone. The Church is still here."
We're facing our share of struggles in United Methodism. It's human nature to view them as threats to our very existence. The reality is that in a couple of decades, we're likely to look very different as a denomination. So yes, we need to ask new questions. And even if the answers we get simply won't agree with our current perspective, the Church will still be here.
