The strange, the odd, the hilarious

I don’t know if you know this, but a copy editor/story finder spends a lot of time combing various wire services for usable stories and inspiring ideas. It’s fun to do, and while many stories are depressingly familiar, humans get up to enough crazy junk to keep me entertained on a daily basis.

But our purview is fairly narrow; a lot of the good stories are unusable simply because they’re not relevant to the Reporter’s aims or demographic. The best get forwarded around the office and to friends . . . which feeds my pet theory that most office chain mails get started by copy editors.

No more! With one or two (or four or five) gentle nudges from Robin, I’ve decided to launch ReligiOddity, a (hopefully) weekly sidebar in the Resources section of the United Methodist Reporter. I’ll be highlighting the oddest and funniest religious news I can find, which has the bonus side effect of legitimizing my time spent scouring news wires for goofy stories.

Look for the first ReligiOddity to appear in the May 30th edition. And, of course, if you happen to find anything you think is worthy of inclusion, please drop me a line at klowery@umr.org . . .
